Have you ever seen a feather through a microscope? They are a big part of the magic that affords birds the gift of flight. But feathers can do alot more…up to 23 purposes for birds. water-feather

Everyone, please bring a feather and a sketchpad!

micro Depending on the shape of our feathers, we will try to determine if it helps birds fly, lift or steer; protects them from the sun, rain and wind; or mostly helps keep them warm.

microsope sketchy I will bring my microscope for everyone to get a better understanding of how the barbules and hooklets interconnect making them waterproof and somewhat windproof. Bring a sketchbook to record what your feather looks like with your eye and under the microscope’s lens.

If you don’t know what kind of bird you just saw, you can use the BIRDFINDER to figure it out.

Feather facts we will explore:

1. The bird with the least feathers is the Ruby Hummingbird with only 940 feathers – the most feathers is the Whistling Swan which can have as many as 25,000.

2. The longest feathers in the world belong to an ornamental chicken bread in Japan in 1972, this specimen had tail feathers almost 35 ft long.

3. Feathers are made of keratin, like fingernails, horns and hair.

4. Owls have unzipped feather ends – affording them silent flight.

A few months back an inspiring friend invited my family to join in the Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 Origami cranes as a prayer for Healing of the Earth and all sentient beings who live upon it. World History via Sugar 3/21 Potluck

What do you know about Sugar? Yes it’s sweet, but do you know what kind of plant it comes from? Do you know how it came to be on your continent? Join M&B this week as we learn how the History of the World changed because of the sweetness of Sugar.

Rum is derived from SugarCane

Before sugar came onto the scene in many parts of the globe, Honey was the reigning champion of natural sweeteners, as Bees were everywhere. But the plant, sugarcane was only in southern Asia. Sugar was the secret of the southern Orient for over 4,000 years. Traders didn’t bring it to the Mediterranean until the 8th Century. And in less than two years it is said that not one village in Mesopotamia did not have sugarcane growing. Sugarcane was one of the plants Christopher Columbus brought to Hispanolia (modern day Haiti/Dominica Republic) on his second Voyage to the New World. In the 19th & 20th Centuries, cane became one of the three items that made up the TransAtlantic Trade. (Parents, I will leave discussing slavery with your children to you – as I believe this is a sensitive part of history for families to disclose). BTW – many people believe USA wouldn’t have gained independence if not for the British crown diverting the lion’s share of its military to protect its Caribbean sugarcane plantations from insurrection. cane

In warm climates, sugarcane grows with almost No Assistance whatsoever. Sweeteners can be derived from other natural elements like beets, stevia plant, brown rice and yucca plants. Come taste what the pulp or raw sugar from our stalk of SugarCane (Ula is holding it).

ACTIVITY- Bring a (natural) sweetener for our BLIND taste test: Agave, Beet Sugar, Brown Rice Sugar, Honey, Brown Sugar, Sugar Cane, Stevia… (photo below)

At home ACTIVITY, make your own peppermint candy or at home CRAFT - Make colorful baskets from sugar and yarn.

Chemistry of Sugar: table sugar is actually TWO molecules combined. It looks like this:

The molecular formula for sucrose is C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁

In order to prevent cross contamination, everyone recieved 5 or 6 toothpicks to taste the syrups.

C₆H₁₂O₆ + C₆H₁₂O₆ => C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁+ H₂O

Robots & Circuitry Fun 3/14

Go Crazy making a Robot outfit or mini robots from recyclables. A touch of tinfoil makes any box look like it is a robot!

What is the difference between a Robot and a Machine? Best answer wins a Maker’s Kit Toothbot below! I pre-ordered two dozen toothbots from Make (which will come to $3 a kit).

There will be some assembly, which will help in our understanding of circuitry. I will walk the kids through visuals, like with the flashlight below in how a circuit works. And they will get a great idea while building the toothbot. In the image, the yellow part is the battery, the small black disc on tip is the motor, and I’m sure you can all guess to what will take the place of wheels.

For our space lovers, Mars will enter into the discussion as it relates to NASA’s famous rovers that many M&B families have seen on tour of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, or at least the dopplegangers of those on Mars right now.
