Hero & Heroine Day 9/6

Why do we need Heroes?  My husband and I are always on the hunt for people in history or in real life that will inspire our children.  This week, I invite families to explore their list of personal Heroes in order to present one to us all.    To get you started, here are images of some famous human rights heroes from my Freedoms, Rights & Responsibilities blog that I posted a few years back. heros-little I have peppered this week’s blog with links to favorite biographies we found at our local libraries.  Hero Day will roll out in similar fashion to last year’s History FUN day, where each child (with or w/out parental assistance) took a turn sharing a about someone (or some animal) with costumes, props, visual aids, and/or food.

JrankinBy sharing the stories of people like Jeannette Rankin, Jacques Cousteau, Miriam Makeba or Fibonacci as heroic, my daughters are absorbing values that will help guide them at the forks in their lives.  Heroes oftentimes start out as ordinary as you and I, but then seem to opt for a different path than what was expected.  Some decided after they were told something couldn’t be done.  Heroes attempt to do “the impossible” over and over again. Some have risked their homes, their families and their lives to do what they felt was right.  And each of them made tried to make their world better.

The Olympics are filled with heroes and only last week, Diana Nyad, at age 62 made her 4th attempt (her first occurred during her 20′s) to swim from Cuba to the tip of Florida.  That is 103 miles without ever getting out of the ocean. dina nyad She set a goal for herself and kept a positive focus as well as took her setbacks with the utmost grace.  She had to get out of the water a mere 30 miles shy of her goal, succumbing to severe storms, painful jellyfish stings and severe sunburn.  And yet to the  reporters she viewed her experience to be “not about the destination, it was about determination and inspiration!”  That’s the kind of people I want my children to consider when making decisions in their lives.  Diana, might have not been a swimmer, had it not been for Annetter Kellerman, the Mermaid Queen who swam the world.

In our house, we honor failures and mistakes.  This is where “Active Learning” occurs.  If a project is completed glitch-free, what we learn isn’t nearly as bountiful as when things don’t go as planned.  When something doesn’t go as planned, there is an opportunity to truly engage our brains to determine what works, rule out variables, and find the motivation to keep going through adversities.  We reaffirm the pride in pushing past obstacles with anecdotes of modern and historical figures, like Nicola Tesla, Marie Curie, Louis Pasteur.  “Energy and persistence conquer all things,”said Benjamin Franklin.

Quite recently, a 15-year old, Jack Andraka, invented an early detection test for many cancers, including the pancreatic cancer.  jackWe emphasized to our girls that Jack sent 200 letters requesting a chance to test out his theory in a lab.  And he was rejected 199 times.  But he only needed the one.  Incidentally, the test cost $0.03 and he patented the tests and hired a tough patent attorney to insure that the tests remain affordable. aidenOr look at 13-year old Aiden, our Fibonacci specialist, who linked the pattern of trees to optimize solar panel usage.  By placing solar panels in similar patterns to the leaves on trees (a sequence re-discovered by Fibonacci in 1400′s), Aiden can harness 20%-50% more energy from the sun. These heroes has ONE great idea and found people to help support them to bring it to life.

Einstein, one of our planet’s greatest intellectual and scientific minds once said, ” “There is not the slightest indication that energy will ever be obtainable from the atom.”  See, we can get it wrong and still be great!

Who is the next hero to inspire you or your family?  I can’t wait to hear about them from you and your children this week.  Please get to the park as close as 1:00 pm in order to best support the efforts of our M&B kids.  Email if you are planning on attending and presenting so I can determine the best place to take a play break between presentations to keep our audience in “Fly Form!”

Figures of Speech Fun: Charades & Art Cards 8/30

Join us for a day of crafting and play-acting with FIGURES of SPEECHIMG_5702Through games like Charades and creating Secret Art Pictures, we will bring these fun phrases and important parts of our literary world to life.  Figurative language uses words to “paint pictures in our mind,” instead of describing exactly what it is.  Many poems use figurative language to convey feelings and experiences that precise descriptions could not express.  beeAnd they are fun!

We owe William Shakespeare a debt of gratitude for many shakespeareof the figures of speech that we use today.  The word “EYEBALL” never existed until he put “eye” and “ball” together.  We will try to create our own new words, similes, metaphors and idioms like Shakespeare!

We will explore Similes, Metaphors and Idioms, with Ideas from Bruce Lansky, avid poet and advocate for children having oodles and oodles of FUN with poetry.

We will laugh and dance as I read from Similes & Metaphors by Ann Heirichs illustrated by Dan McGeehan and David Moore.Untitled-1 We will also be celebrating Mia & Bella’s B-days with desserts brought by their Moms.

For More Info:

I am only presenting three figures of speech: simile, metaphor and idioms. For anyone who wants more figurative language use click here for an extensive listing of figures of speech within the English language. Other books or sites I perused in preparation for this parkday… Figures of Speech: 60 ways to turn a phrase by Arthur Quinn; Essay on Man & Other Poems by Alexander Hope (the 3rd most quoted person in  The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson); Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer; Common idioms from the King James Bible and the list keeps growing.  And I must not forget the Radiolab podcast, Words that Changed the World, totally worth the listen, even though the Shakespeare aficionado, James Shapiro doesn’t occur until over  halfway through. Shapiro is the author of Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare?

Letterboxing II & H20 Spray n’ IcePlay 8/23

elephantI want everyone to get a chance to try their Letterboxing skills at our home park this week.  Bring your letterboxing supplies (see last week’s post).  As soon as you arrive, use the clues I’ve listed below (or will hand out upon arrival) to find the M&B letterbox.   The kids who came to the Pool last week, listened to the clues i shared in order to track down the letterbox, open it up and stamp the handmade Elephant into their books.  But this time, you and/or your family will follow the clues on your own to find the letterbox.  And remember to be discrete to ensure no one else sees you pluck or put the box back in it’s place.

Why Letterbox is awesome:

1. It’s free
2. It’s gets you outside
3. You see places and wildlife that you have never seen
4. Adds zest to an out-of-town trip
5. You feel like you’re a part of a secret society
6. You can pretend you’re a pirate on a mission
7. It encourages you to leave the place better than you found it.
Thus the term “Cache-In, Trash-Out”

And with breezes and reasonable temperatures this Thursday, we should enjoy a comfortable day at the park. **For Climate Control: Bring spray bottles for water tag and I will bring some ice shapes.

Comicletterbox toolsFor those who want to try to carve their own stamps, I will show everyone how to safely turn an eraser into a stamp.  I will share my carving tools and take turns assisting families who want to carve their own one-of-a-kind stamps (I don’t think anyone under 6 or 7 should use the tools). I will also walk anyone through the process of building and planting your own letterbox.

If you are planning on making your own letterbox and planting it, bring the following: waterproof container, a stamp (or eraser to carve a stamp into it), a pad small enough to fit in your box, and a note to tape on lid to explain what someone might have accidentally found.  Also have a pen to record your steps and clues that you will post online on Letterboxing or Atlas Quest to help others actually FIND your creation.
