Wilderness Survival – Kid Style 2/16

As our M&B Bi-Annual Family Campout approaches (taking place March 16-18 @ Joshua Tree Nat’l Park), it’s a perfect time to gain some extra Wilderness skills. Thanks to M&B Dad, Stephen we received a visit from real life HERO - C.Denise Edwards. Col. Lt Edwards is a Search and Rescue specialist who has spent the last fifty years searching, rescuing and recovering missing persons in the wilderness or after disasters. She shared how to prevent getting lost or injured and how to ensure personal safety in the desert, forest and urban locales. Us parents – received some great tips! Thank you Denise. compass

Stephen taught the children how to properly use a compass. Some kids had it down so well they planted treasures and told the others how many paces and what compass degree in order to find it. Others made maps with their own way to help lead playmates to the “buried treasure.” M&B Dad Stephen, who is taking classes from Denise at EPI, will be building on these skills with a map orienteering game and quasi-scavenger hunt during our family campout in Joshua Tree. Anatomy Guts vs Feeling Guts 2/9

Kids became the Digestive System by breaking food down with their hands and enzyme-filled water (SPIT), Vinegar & Baking soda (BILE), and Yogurt (PRO-BIOTIC BACTERIA in gut) to truly experience the journey of food.

One of our M&B kids recently had his appendix taken out by a surgeon. What the heck is an appendix? Is it shaped like a banana, a baseball hat, a bathing suit… what?

Untitled-2 main_img It hangs out around your loopity-looping Large Intestines and your Small intestines. Your intestines are where your food travels after it leaves your stomach. This is what we call our “Guts.”

Adults have 5 feet of large intestines and 22 feet of small intestines squeezed and squooshed inside their bodies. With a bit of arts and crafts kids got a real good idea of just how long it takes for food to travel through out body. And they all became the Digestive System by breaking food down with their hands and enzyme-filled water (SPIT), Vinegar & Baking soda (BILE), and Yogurt (PRO-BIOTIC BACTERIA) to experience the journey of food. This was first introduced at blanket-time when I read from my bi-lingual book – The Journey of Mister Poop/Senor CaCa).

Our M&B friend (see pictures at top) shared his hospital experience with us all and other kids and parents shared their ambulance and hospital stories. And time to ask each person about their events helped expand the moment of healing from these scary and traumatic experiences. Here’s a great link to help prepare your child for surgery. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has a great interactive site to help gage and recover from hospital experiences.

Games to Help Recognize our Gut Feelings

Another thing is in our guts – the feelings that tell us we do or don’t like something or someone. That is called a “gut feeling.” Like with our parkday about Emotions, Empathy & Empowerment, we will play some games that help us understand our “good” and “bad” feelings in our guts!

Supplies Recyclable Request: 1. As many tubes as you can bring – toilet paper, paper towel, packaging, or scrap paper & tape to make tubes by hand. 2. Small balls, bouncy ball size, ping pong balls, raquet ball size or smaller. 3. Masking tape.

We’ve played with Isaac Newton and gravity, amongst other SuperHero Forces before, but this parkday is dedicated to GRAVITY. And boy will it be FUN! Everyone will Play Gravity Games to explore the range of our Center of Gravity. And incorporate them into Sumo Wrestling Fun. Whoo hoo.

We’ll make some Groovy Gravity models that you can also do at home. (anyone have some sculpy or modeling clay to donate?)

But the Grand Fun will be our GROOVY WALL OF GRAVITY. For this EVERYONE must bring as many tubes as you can recycle: Toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, wrapping paper rolls, packaging tubes. Bring scrap paper and tape to roll up and make some tubes. The bigger the better.
