Anatomy Obstacle Course 12/15

IMG_1095Every kid started with a Red Blood vessel, newly oxygenated at the lungs – beginning of the obstacle course.  They ran as fast as they could through the heart and then took off to their destination body part.  We thought once they had  hit each body part (leg muscle, arm muscle, brain, liver, heart, etc) they would be done. But no way. It was so much fun that they kept going back for more and ended up going to the lung over a dozen times to do it all again!

IMG_1084Thanks to Amy for setting this fun and educational day up for us all.  Of course it started as blanket time with books and quite a bit of Q&A with the kids.  But all the work and time AMY put in on the basketball court which was  temporarily turned into a dynamic human body paid off. IMG_1117And thanks to all the parents who manned the stations and facilitated all the activities so that each kid really enjoyed and absorbed info about the correlated body part.  They walked a balancing beam for the brain, hula hooped for the organs safely tucked in the abdomen, stretched and ran in place for leg muscles, did push ups and circle rings for arm muscles, jumped jacks for the heart and started out with deep breathing at the lungs.

Everyone had the chance to take their own pulse and compare heart rates before and after these excitable exercises!

Let’s Create Paintings that Pop! 12/8

Painting is Fun.  There are lots of ways to create a painting.  IMG_0822And a lot of ways to unleash creativity.IMG_0838

pushpinartThis artist used pushpins to create portraits.  Eric Daigh has taken painting by numbers to an extreme.  He won $50,000 for his entry of his portraits in an Ohio art show.

I’ve had fun teaching painting seminars to all age groups : from kids 2 -  retirees over 84.  Ironically, the very young and the very old are the best painters. Not just because they have more fun, but because they value their creativity more than what others will think.

20" x 32" Watercolor by Jessica Deltac

My teaching philosophy in regards to painting, is simple.  Simple as Magic.  All painting techniques and mastery of the supplies can be viewed as a variety of tricks.  I will show you some tricks and you try them until you find ones that you feel competent and happy.

Certain tricks appeal to people more than others.  This week I will focus on  teaching how to use colors and shapes to make an object like an apple stand out.  appleAn apple doesn’t need to be red or green, it can be purple or yellow – and somehow everyone will know it is still an apple.  This is Painting that Pops.  I  will start with a bit of a color wheel explanation before I unleash the inner artists.  I will need a bit of help from parents to help prep the art stations.

Adults are welcome to join in.

For those who prefer to start with strong lines or outline their work for more Pop, I plan to bring some Madhubani print outs for kids to inspire.  If you would prefer, you can use crayons or markers or paint on Madhubani copies.

Madhubani Paintings of India saved a community from starving during a drought.  The town name means “Forest of Honey,” and yet the drought in the late 1950′s prevented the earth from providing.  Originally these paintings were done through out the year on walls with root pigments and cow dung.  But during the drought, these women were encouraged to put their artistry on paper and sell it at market.  And it has been a success story.

Fishes in a Madhubani painting depict good luck, fertility and procreation, peacocks symbolize romantic love while serpents in these paintings are identified as divine protectors.  Links for B&W copies to print and color at home.

***Bonus:  Due to the interest in painting with watercolors, I will be hosting a watercolor group on the first Thursday of each month.  Anyone is welcome to join in.  This Thursday, I will do an exposition and we will discuss the format of the monthly painting meetings (share work, learn a new technique and paint).

Anyone can watch the tutorial – no supplies required for this first meeting. However, anyone who wishes to paint in our monthly watercolor club will need to bring their own paper, paints, and brushes.    In the upcoming months, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and seeing the fun and inspired artwork of those willing to share their art.IMG_0848IMG_0846IMG_0845

Manners Mean Respect 11/17

IMG_5115IMG_0600Politeness counts! Character counts!

Understanding how to treat others with respect and attention fosters empathy and self-respect.   Etiquette includes being polite, considerate and ideally compassionate.  This includes how to greet people, how to speak on a telephone, how to dine at a restaurant, and how to let people know they matter.  In utilizing proper etiquette, relationships are built that can afford opportunities – opportunities we might otherwise miss out on.   However, it is important to recognize that “good manners” mean different things to many people. And as a parent to two questioning daughters, I feel compelled to admit to them that some conventions are not steeped IMG_7022in purpose, but merely repeated due to tradition.  To continue an old tradition, or pick up a new one, are topics open for discussion in our home.  What works for you and your family will be specific to your values.   And there is alot of advice out there; be prepared to screen.  For instance, Ron Clark’s Essential 55 rules were all the rage a few years back.  It seemed to work for his students, but I believe each child is an individual.

place-setting“We sneeze in our elbow so we don’t pass on germs, but why do we say excuse me when we burp?”  Some cultures view loud noises while eating to be complimentary.  Having discussions with my children about the value of etiquette is a great way for the ideas and traditions to become integrated.  Sharing your difficulties with certain “good manners” will help bridge the gap between kids and adults.  And creating “dry-run” experiences where good manners are not imperative, take the pressure off both parents and kids.  I try to have enough time to allow questions why we practice certain rituals.  Do you want your children to perform proper etiquette “just because”, or do you want to help them understand the value, purpose and benefits of good manners?

So this week,  we will create table settings and share imaginary or real food and drink, in a game of good manners bad manners.  One of our Moms will open a discussion about manners and read some fun books to keep the kids engaged and filled with a sense of purpose about etiquette.

Good manners get you things and/or places.

By creating fun opportunities to learn about polite manners, kids and parents can turn the tide and make manners fun and memorable.  When I was about my eldest daughter’s age, I fell into the deep desire for some IMG_2942new toy advertised like gangbusters before Christmas.  My mother (cunning woman), promised me that toy for Christmas, if I called 4 stores to determine who had it for the lowest price.  I was petrified to call a sales clerk on the phone, but I was definitely motivated.  It was the first time I made that crinkly sound with thin yellow pages on my own.  On the first call, I froze and immediately hung up the phone.  But I had heard enough adults make similar calls and knew what to say.  I had the luxury of doing this at my pace with no one around.  When I did actually use words, I was amazed that they listened to me and answered all my questions – as if I were an adult.  In the end, I actually only called three stores (and told my mom the 4th didn’t carry it).  I don’t remember the toy I got that Christmas, but I will never forget trying out my first “real” phone manners.

We will make some phone calls to Legoland, a toystore and maybe an ice cream parlor (real or imaginary) to get comfortable with the rhythm of phone calls.

Cthank-youonsideration and concern matter.

For the third activity, with the help of parents, each child will discuss a person who cares about them who warrants a Thank you note.  Thank you notes are a great way to reflect on the care someone has had for you.  This is also similar to the reason why we send Get Well cards.  It tells a person that they matter to us.  That the things they do matter.  And that we appreciate what they do and who they are.

New Park hours 11am – 4/5pm  Potluck lunch will be from 11:45-12:30.  Activities this week will start after 12:30pm. I will again bring my camping stove, teapot, assortment of teas and 8 mugs – can someone bring extra water ? IMG_0595
