FOCUSFish CIRCUS – Fun & AMAZING!!

IMG_5234

What a BIG TOP show with an intimate Circus Family feel.  Some of you are aware of the Circus/Arielist classes for kids and adults offered by FOCUSFish in numerous LA/OC locations as well as the outdoor studioIMG_5194

in Top o’ Topanga (founder Kristy Beauvais‘ private studio). Well this Friday their summer camp put on an brilliant Circus show that highlighted the dedication of these amazing kids (and adults) who are mastering the Circus Arts with Fun & Flair!  And if you couldn’t be there in person, get a taste by double clicking the photos.

What a Wonderful Night of Love, Connection & Fun. Thank you to Everyone! Thank you Kristy & Family!!!

What a Wonderful Night of Love, Connection & Fun. Thank you to Everyone! Thank you Kristy & Family!!!

IMG_2991

IMG_4793…..I have personally witnessed Kristy’s supportive teaching style and commitment to safety embolden each child.   Under her tutelage EVERY child (not just mine) is excited and proud to take on their next leap, climb or spin.   The Ariel Arts increase core body strength and eye-hand coordination as well as offer a healthy dose of risk factor into children’s lives.  The later has been a recent hot topic in reference to the emotional and physiological growth of children. See the New York Times article Can a Playground be TOO Safe or watch Gever Tulley’s TED talk on the 5 Dangerous things you should let your kid do.

In the last BIG TENT performance of the Summer, not only did kids who have attended FOCUSFish Circus Camp perform (like Ula, Lily, Sasha, Niko, Diego & a few more M&B kids) under a REAL CIRCUS tent, but many Professional Talents performed as well: Lexi Pearl IMG_2986as the finale,  Antonia Bath from Cirque Berzerk delivering Two Men with Three Balls (Hilarious!)  and our own Tia Didden delivering a Parisian Mermaid Love story of One.  The accomplished kids had us ooohing, ahhhing and dancing along with a soundtrack that was better than Cirque de Soleil. Untitled-3 Trust Ranch in Topanga Canyon graciously afforded their big space to host not only the Giant Tent and stadium seating, but spaces and places for a wine bar and other goodies and lots of tables for pre-show picnicking and gathering.  What a night to be a part of a loving and supportive community!

Incidentally, this Circus Extravaganza was not just a finale for the camp kids, but a fundraiser for FOCUSfish’s Non-profit work,  that brings FUN Ariel arts to body-compromised kids and/or money-compromised kids/families.  Any support from the benefit night or in the future would be a great help to those in need of fun, exercise and greater personal pride! Natural Fibers: Knitting & Worry Dolls 7/28

IMG_5169

IMG_5115

A cute knitting doll to make it so easy for the kids.

Kids learned  how to finger knit as Nicole taught us how a simple loom we can make from toilet paper rolls w/ tape or rubber bands & popsicle sticks can help.  IMG_7090Or if you want to make a loom ahead of time and bring to the park Thursday – go to this blog for more fun & quick knit set ups with simple stuff from your house.

Thank you to Maggie for helping as well! Bravo to everyone who challenged themselves! IMG_5161

You can also use yarn to make god’s eyes or also known as evil eyes or in Spanish -  Ojo de Dios.  You can use sticks from your backyard or a park, or you can reuse your popsicle sticks from this hot summer.  If you’ve forgotten how to make ‘em – watch this video.

010-Oct_12_2008_-_photo_0010__2_Gods_Eye_op_800x650And I brought the goodies for the last natural fibers station.  Worry Dolls, originated in Guatemala, are dolls that remove your worries while you sleep.  I made the step-by-step demo below to make it easy to make your own.

Again it was a lovely afternoon spent under the shade of trees with ice-cold watermelon!  You would be amazed at the cool breeze passing through the park.  See you all next time – to celebrate MudPies & Butterflies TWO Year Anniversary.  Whoo hoo!IMG_6080IMG_5167

Stone Soup Potluck & Stories (7/21)

IMG_4878Families requested that M&B  repeat our very first Potluck experience two years ago.

Stone Soup: Depending on the version: either a beggar, soldiers or an old lady are repeatedly turned away at the doors of homes in one town.  Instead of leaving, he/they/she sits down and boils a cauldron of water over a fire.  The main ingredient that is placed in the pot – a magic stone.  As each townsperson inquires about the soup, whose aroma mysteriously smells yummier they return home to bring an ingredient to add to the pot.  In the end, the beggar  happily ladles an exquisite feast of a stew to everyone. IMG_4889IMG_7096

IMG_7105………And to tie in our Potluck this special day that turns into night – Do you know the story of Stone soup?  It is so appropriate for MudPies & Butterflies.  Make this the story or book to share one of the next nights or commutes around town.  This story touches on charity, community and yummy food.  We will do an impromptu theatrical version before Potluck.   Before Potluck prep (Starting @4pm) we will play games and share stories on a mini stage for any kids who want to perform to an audience.

IMG_7131IMG_4901IMG_4912IMG_4933IMG_4945IMG_4923IMG_4917IMG_4902IMG_4943

Here is a fuller version of Stone Soup with all sort of learning ideas to be side items surrounding Stone Soup for all ages.

IMG_4910Our Village parkday at M&B holds a monthly potluck on the 3rd Thursday of the month so that family and friends can attend who would otherwise not be able to join in!  And this is the week.  With the help of our kids and ingredients supplied by our village, a two delightful pots  of stone soup were prepared.   Kids shared in the making of this soup by washing, cutting, peeling and prepping the food.

IMG_4938……………………………..We made Two Stone Soups: a Vegan Pot and a non-Vegan pot.  Thank you Anna & Jenni who watched the pots.  And everyone who helped empower the children (especially when it wasn’t even your child) how to use a knife and share their hearts in the preparation of food for those they will sustain.  Humble Thanks to ALL!

IMG_4947IMG_4958IMG_4950

………………….And a few families followed us in the  FREE Sunset Concert @ the Skirball Cultural Center .  We got a perfect spot on the second story where the kids could be free to dance and play. And what a great band and music to dance to – Thanks to Maria De Barros from Cape Verde (African Coast).  The Skirball further caters to families by having TWO rooms stocked with crafts and games during their Sunset Concerts. Bravo!IMG_4962IMG_4961IMG_4965IMG_4959
