1st ScienceFest in SantaMonica Mts

IMG_6821Santa Monica Mountains and a bevy of Rangers kicked off the First annual Science Fest at Paramount Ranch. What an amazing day to get kids out and INTO nature.  There were spiders shows, reptile shows, lots of exhibits with animals, plants and more!

All the kids were invited to personalize their own Field Journal to get excited about recording the events of the day as well as the bits of interesting things they see on daily forays into the land of the green and blue!

IMG_6829One of the first stations we went to was all about OWL POOP !  yes, they hadIMG_6822 scat IMG_6831from Owls, that once the kids donned their surgical gloves, could dissect and find all sorts of evidence of their diet (including jaws, bones and teeth of shrews and other rodents).  With great print outs they could compare what they found with a guide to determine what the Owl ate before it pooped the pellet.

At each station you could opt to get a stamp upon completion of the exercises or experiments or observations. For one, the kids popped holes in cups for drainage before adding soil.  Then they picked the herb of choice to plant.  And then learned how much water is enough by watering themselves.  Only then would they receive a stamp.  A certain number of stamps afforded a gift from the Festival.  IMG_6838

Next we learned about sunflowers and how they are really hundreds of mini flowers clumped together.   Other stations had Rangers who taught conservation.  IMG_6840IMG_6843IMG_6846IMG_6855IMG_6859IMG_6861IMG_6862IMG_6882IMG_6916IMG_6917IMG_6920IMG_6921IMG_6845

Alfie Kohn on Progressive Education

*This blog is a work in progress. But instead of presenting it once completed and properly edited, I am availing it during the whole process to further inspire and model the ability to be IMPERFECT and open to change.  One of the ways I wish to parent and inspire others.”

Due to the amazing online networks of attachment parenting families, homeschooling families and reproductive rights supporters, I hear of some amazing events I would otherwise miss out on.  It surely helps that I live in Los Angeles, a city I didn’t think I would ever want to raise children in.  But this town and its amazing breadth of watering holes and social events offers immeasurable opportunities for a budgeting family to see and experience great things.  Last week, one such gem fell into my lap, more accurately my monitor.  Alfie Kohn, the defender of children and their right to passionately learn about the world, would be speaking at Occidental College on tax day 2010.  And as the result of some committed people and progressive schools, the lecture would be FREE.  It didn’t matter the topic; this was someone I should experience firsthand.

Alfie-Kohn

With a bit of wiggling of schedules with my husband, getting on waiting lists (and patiently waiting) as well as enlisting googlemaps assistance, I was on the front row of someone who inspires you to unlearn what you think you needed to coexist in a complicated society.   And in a manner, that has you continuously chuckling at the logic of it all (or your lack of questioning said logic beforehand).

A few years back, Kohn’s books on parenting kicked up quite a bit of dust in my playgroups.  Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards & Punishments to Love & Reason 2005.  Many of us are actively attempting to change the cycle of parenting that disabled us during our own childhoods.  And through encouragement and positive reinforcement, we thought we were doing a great job.  Well at least until Alfie came along and debunked positive rewards.  Even the phrase “Good Job!” was not so good anymore. Through emotional dissection of my reactionary pendulum swing, he pointed out how both punishment and reward can lead a child to perform for on outcome. This has the potential to prevent learners of any age from finding their passions, tuning in and pursuing goals  (albeit in realms of academics, sports or volunteerism).  By establishing that success comes in the form of a reward or by evading a disappointment, we are grimly taking away belief in themselves.  Their internal compass leading them to be moral and upstanding in their household, schoolroom or world is neither tested nor strengthened.  Instead they are incented to mechanistically respond to rewards or punishment. Not a system that holds up too well when sent off to college for the first time or riding alone down the street on their bicycle .

Further assistance in breaking negative parenting cycles for me personally, has come directly from the Center of Non-Violent Parenting, CNVP located here in LA.  I highly recommend any programs or materials from this organization.  And for anyone wanting to take a class, they have wonderful attendants providing childcare during classes. Their motto sheds the best light on their intent – Raising Children with Care; Raising Children to Care.

So as a parent, I (re)learned alot about parenting from Alfie Kohn (and CNVP).  But now with one school-age child, I am listening to what he imparts on the topic of education.  Alfie Kohn is indeed a trendsetter.  But his ability to understand the plights and frustrations of being a second rate citizen due to unfair ageism is irrefutable.  As I witnessed a spectrum of emotional gesticulating to poignant classroom anecdotes,  the injustice of which he spoke was all too palatable.   Even though it is a bit foggy, as many of us have attempted to bury our own education memories permanently,  I do remember the futility, the degradation and the unchecked authority.

Untitled-22 But this lecture, filled with hilarity, sincerity and scrutiny, was focused on more than the broken system of our Education.  A fact that anyone in every political corner will attest to.  Instead, Alfie Kohn was offering a solution-focused, factually backed way out of the problem.  But in order to follow this Pied-piper, we as parents, teachers and tax payers have to do more than follow innate logic and scientifically managed studies. We will have to put our wagers on the intangible -  Faith in our Children.  And take our money off of the accountable like test scores, grades, homework and heavy books that literally burden the backs of our children. Can you do that?  And do you really want the outcome?

Do you want free thinkers, who will question your motives and challenge the world in your homes and classrooms?  I do!  This is how our society will  uncover answers, devise new questions and reinvent itself – for the better.  But the traditional modality in classrooms at present does not empower children, but instead reaffirms that their ideas, voices, and differences are inconsequential to the grind of the Big Machine.  This breeds apathy, not inventiveness and determination.

*Author’s Note – it is important to know you are reading both the ideas of Alfie Kohn and the places I am going with it.  To get a better picture of the inspiration that is solely Alfie Kohn, – go to www.AlfieKohn.org as he posts so many great essays and lists for EVERYONE.
